How to Act Without Words

Masami doesn't get to see Satomi much, but when she does, there's always a part of her that's sad for Satomi. She hugs her a touch too long or a touch too hard, and Satomi pulls back and cocks her head to the side.

"What's the matter?" Satomi asks.

Masami wants to shake her head and not say anything, but it spills out of her mouth; it always does. "I'm just sad for you."

Satomi laughs. "But why?"

And Masami wants to say it all, that she's heard what everyone's saying, that it's not fair that they all judge, that she will always be Satomi's friend. But the words are too much, so all Masami ends up doing is hugging Satomi, and this time, even if it's a little tight, she doesn't care. Satomi doesn't seem to either because she laughs and hugs Masami just as tightly.

"Thanks," Satomi says, the smile evident in her tone.
